Event on Life’s Beginnings

The wonders of life’s beginnings took center stage at the third edition of the Science Cafe series, a collaboration between Msheireb Museums and Sidra Medicine.

Held on June 3 at Bin Jelmood House, the event titled “Life’s Beginnings: Insights into Pregnancy, Fertility, and Newborn Screening” explored critical topics shaping the future of precision medicine in these areas. The session gathered medical professionals, researchers, and community members for in-depth discussions. Abdulla Al Naama, General Manager of Msheireb Museums, highlighted the growing public interest in the Science Cafe series, noting: “Today, with the third edition, we see increasing engagement with the topics we present.”

Dr. Khalid Fakhro, Chief Research Officer at Sidra Medicine, emphasized the importance of public engagement. “By raising awareness about the advancements in research and clinical care happening in Qatar, we foster a deeper connection with our community and showcase our commitment to medical innovation.”

The event featured a lineup of expert speakers. Dr. Khawla Ismail, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist at Sidra Medicine, discussed the crucial yet often overlooked importance of pre-pregnancy care. “Pre-conception care is as important as pregnancy care for a healthy pregnancy and baby. Pregnant women should schedule pre-pregnancy check-ups to optimize their health before starting a pregnancy,” Dr. Ismail explained.

Prof. Johnny Awwad, Executive Chair of Women’s Services and Division Chief of Reproductive Medicine at Sidra Medicine, focused on fertility issues and assisted reproductive technologies like IVF. “We cooperate as two teams—the clinical team demonstrates clinical work, and the research team shows how we advance our practices. We’re not just consumers of medicine; we’re producers of innovation and new research,” he said.

Noor Eldoss, an attendee and healthcare professional at Hamad Medical Corporation’s genetic department, shared her insights from the event. “I learned how to improve women’s experiences during pregnancy and how genomic testing technology can be developed to better serve patients,” she said.

Fahad Al Turky, Manager of Exhibitions and Programmes at Msheireb Museums, expressed pride in the event’s success. “Our partnership with Sidra Medicine has been instrumental in bringing these crucial topics to the forefront and engaging the community in meaningful discussions,” he concluded.
