Doha, Qatar - The Ministry of Interior's Penal and Correctional Institutions Department has announced that products handcrafted by inmates will go on sale through the ministry's "Sooum" application starting Sunday, July 19, 2026, offering the public a new way to purchase goods made within Qatar's correctional facilities.
The announcement was made through a social media post from the ministry, confirming that the sale of inmate-made items would formally begin on the specified date. This is not the first time the department has used the platform for this purpose; similar sales rounds have been run periodically since the initiative first launched, with earlier phases held in January 2025, November 2025, and June 2026.
According to details on the initiative, Sooum functions as the Ministry of Interior's dedicated application for auctions and goods sold by its various departments, supporting multiple purchasing and bidding methods along with interactive notifications. Members of the public can access the platform using their existing Metrash2 login credentials, Qatar's national digital services app, making the sign-up process straightforward for residents already registered with government services.
The initiative is closely tied to the department's broader rehabilitation efforts. Proceeds from the products are directed in full to the inmates themselves, once the cost of raw materials has been deducted, providing them with a lawful source of income intended to support financial stability after their release. Officials have framed the programme as part of a rehabilitation model built around education and vocational training, giving inmates practical skills they can rely on once they reintegrate into society.
How to participate:
Members of the public interested in purchasing inmate-made products can download the Sooum app from the App Store, Google Play, or AppGallery, and log in using their Metrash2 credentials to browse and buy available items once sales open on July 19.
The Penal and Correctional Institutions Department has also periodically showcased inmates' handmade goods at public exhibitions, including at local shopping venues, as part of efforts to raise awareness of the rehabilitation work carried out within Qatar's correctional institutions.
