Latest Driving Rules and Penalties Every Motorist in Qatar Should Know By - September 16, 2021

“Traffic violations happen due to ignorance of law,” says Capt. Mohammed Abdullah Al-Kuwari, Officer - Traffic Awareness Department at the General Directorate of Traffic.

Every road user owes a duty of care and caution. He/she is duty-bound to drive his/her vehicle in such a way not to endanger themselves and more importantly pedestrians, cyclists, two-wheeler riders and other vehicle users.

Qatar’s Ministry of Interior (MoI) in association with the Directorate of Traffic, felt the need for a campaign to enlighten the public on traffic rules and penalties. Therefore, just recently, the Public Relations Department of MoI conducted an Awareness Webinar on "Traffic Law and Rules" in the country.

Here are some of the important points discussed during the webinar that every car owner must be aware of to ensure safety and security in Qatar public roads and highways:

Black Point in Traffic Law No. 19/2007
Are you driving in Qatar? Did you know that the country is implementing a system of points, called the “Black Point system?” What is this system and how does it help in monitoring traffic violations?
The traffic law No. 19 of the year 2007 has introduced a Black Point system with the aim of preventing the huge number of road accidents and punishing the errant drivers.
The Qatar driving license is based on this point system where drivers collect points for each infraction.
The Drivers convicted of certain driving related offences will have demerit points recorded on their records.
In two cases, the black points will be erased automatically as mentioned below:
1) If your license was confiscated according to the following table.
2) If the driver did not commit any other traffic crime within one year from the date of committing the last traffic crime.
The Driving Licenses of those who commit traffic crimes will be suspended according to this list.
The traffic crimes fall into two categories:
• Traffic crimes that reject reconciliation.
• Traffic crimes that accept reconciliation.
Below is a table outlining the demerit points for driving offences:
