Qatar General Electricity & water Corporation (KAHRAMAA), in collaboration with Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy launched a competition titled: " The best innovative sustainability Initiative for Qatars hosting FIFA World Cup 2022".
The competition aims to support the innovative and creative ideas within the framework of the work devoted to achieving the sustainability in the State of Qatar, whether in terms of the organization of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, or post-tournament phases by providing the innovators and researchers the opportunity to present their innovations in this field and encourage them further to offer innovative ideas.
In a joint press conference held on this occasion, Sustainability Director at Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy Eng. Bodour Al Meer affirmed that FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 will change the modus operandi of organizing the upcoming tournaments, including the major sporting events in the future, adding that the tournament will lay a sustainable legacy that contributes to promoting UN sustainability development goals and Qatar National Vision 2030.
Eng. Al Meer stated that the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, in collaboration with FIFA, set a strategy for sustainability, which is the first-of-its-kind being jointly planned and set between FIFA, the host country and the local entities concerned with the tournament organization.
It reviews 22 goals, including over 70 tangible initiatives and programs to execute the strategy and achieve its predetermined goals, based on the fact that sustainability issue has been the core theme for FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 from the outset.
She pointed out that five commitments relevant to sustainability have been determined, including building human capabilities, protection of rights of workers, provide a holistic experience at the tournament level, incentivize the economic growth, offer innovative solutions, set a model for good governance and ethical corporate practices, affirming that community individuals are the core partners in achieving the sustainability goals, where their contributions will ensure the achievement of the optimal goal at the social level, which imply that FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 will be a positive legacy for the advantage of future generations.
She indicated that all the tournament stadiums reduce water consumption by %40 to %47, and energy consumption by %30 to %40 where electric buses are utilized by %25.
In his remark on the occasion of launching the competition, Public Relations and Communication Manager at KAHRAMAA Mohammad Al Mohannadi said that such initiative comes to reflect the great interest KAHRAMAA attaches to the issues of innovation, creation and scientific research, especially with respect to the sustainability issues which KAHRAMAA is committed to achieving its goals and supporting the initiatives aimed at promoting them within the framework of its role as a national institution that constantly seeks to achieve Qatar National Vision 2030.
He added that the competition includes three different categories, the first is in the category of short videos that do not exceed 60 seconds, while applicants in the second category compete for applied scientific research projects, and the third category includes smart phone applications aimed at supporting and improving sustainability.
For his part, Head of Creativity, Innovation & Scientific Research Incubator (CIRI) at KAHRAMAA Eng. Rashid Al Rahimi said that the aim of launching the competition is to give a real chance for the creators and researchers to offer their ideas and innovations, in addition to encouraging them to compete via innovative ideas, pointing out that KAHRAMAA, during the past week, had inaugurated the electronic website of the incubator and presented the programs offered to the initiatives and creative ideas stakeholders in recognition of the role undertaken by KAHRAMAA in this vital aspect.
