Remembering the Father Amir
The Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, passed away on Sunday, July 12, at the age of 74. Funeral prayers were held that evening at the Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque before he was laid to rest at Lusail Cemetery, in the presence of the Amir, members of the ruling family, senior officials, and large crowds of mourners. Qatar declared four days of national mourning, with flags flown at half-mast and work suspended across ministries, government agencies, and public institutions.
Widely regarded as the architect of modern Qatar, Sheikh Hamad ruled from 1995 until voluntarily handing power to Sheikh Tamim in 2013, overseeing a period of rapid economic growth, global expansion, and major developments that reshaped Qatar's political and economic standing.
