One prominent trend in today's tourism is the rising popularity of staycation tourism, which gained traction during the COVID-19 pandemic as travel restrictions led people to explore their own cities and local areas. In Qatar, staycations are becoming increasingly popular, with more residents choosing to enjoy local attractions this summer instead of traveling abroad.

Khaled Lakmoush, General Manager at Al Muftah Travels, shared with The Peninsula that fewer people are traveling internationally this summer. He attributes this to the improved tourism infrastructure and facilities available in Qatar. Families are enjoying local museums, beaches, and luxury coastal resorts, which offer relaxation and comfort.

Lakmoush highlighted popular staycation spots in Qatar, such as Souq Waqif for its Qatari culture, Aspire Park for outdoor activities, and Katara Cultural Village for art enthusiasts. Lusail is favored by youngsters for biking and electric scooters, while Desert Falls and Meryal Waterpark are top summer attractions. West Walk is also a popular destination.

He noted that staying in Qatar not only saves money but also provides a deeper connection to local culture and heritage, enhancing mental well-being through relaxation in familiar surroundings.

Ali Thabet, a tourism marketing expert, mentioned that the significant growth in Qatar's tourism industry has led many families to choose staycations. Although exact figures are unavailable, he estimates that over six percent of people in Qatar opt for staycations. He pointed out that many newly air-conditioned open spaces, such as Katara, West Walk, and Al Hazm Mall, make it easier for families to enjoy outdoor activities even in the summer heat.

Thabet also noted that Souq Waqif remains a popular destination year-round, offering a variety of restaurants, cafes, shops, and traditional items.

For information on tourist spots, museums, and cultural landmarks, the Visitor Qatar website is a helpful resource. Prem Kumar, a tourism and travel expert, and General Manager at Somerset West Bay Doha, mentioned that Qatar's diverse range of resorts, hotels, and apartment hotels caters to residents seeking leisure activities. The ‘Your Key To Luxury’ campaign by Katara Hospitality offers discounts on luxury stays, dining, and spa services.

Kumar emphasized the appeal of water-based activities during the hot summer months and highlighted various staycation favorites, including Al Bidda Park, Oxygen Park, Katara Cultural Village, and shopping malls like Mall of Qatar, Doha Festival City, and Villaggio. Museums such as the Museum of Islamic Art, National Museum of Qatar, and Arab Museum of Modern Art are also popular, along with Souq Waqif, Qatar National Library, Doha Sands Beach, Purple Island (Al Thakira Mangroves Forest), Panda House at Al Khor, and the Unesco World Heritage Al Zubarah Archaeological Site.
