Class 9 English
9th class is an important stage in a student's academic life as it lays the foundation for higher studies. To build a strong foundation, fundamental concepts and topics are taught in class 9 making it easier for the students to understand the complex topic that will be taught in higher classes. English is one of the main and scoring subjects. Though English can be studied at ease, it is recommended for the students not to take the subject lightly since the marks obtained in this paper can influence your overall percentage.
We provide you with a few important tips which you have to keep in mind to make your preparation for the class 9 English exam easier.
1. Know the latest syllabus and marks weightage: Syllabus for the English is often changed by the CBSE. So, students should be aware of the latest syllabus. This will make their preparation easy. CBSE class 9 exam question paper is divided into 3 sections with a total of 80 marks. They are;
• Reading comprehension: 20 marks
• Writing skills with grammar: 20 marks
• Literature and Supplementary: 40 marks
2. Create a study plan: Spend 1 hour daily to study English. All sections must be given equal priority. It is highly recommended not to skip any chapter as everything from the syllabus is important. Set a daily target of chapters to be finished. Make sure you strictly follow your daily schedules and study with full concentration. Take small breaks between your schedules.
3. Section-wise strategy:
• Reading comprehension: This is one of the sections where you can score marks easily. Students should practice a few unseen passages to perform well in this section. It is advised to follow this method while attempting the unseen passage. Read the questions before reading the passage. Mark the lines which you feel are the answers while reading. This technique will help you save time from reading the passage again and again.
• Writing Skills: Students can improve their vocabulary and writing skills by developing the habit of reading newspapers, storybooks etc. Try to learn a new word along with its meaning daily. To perform well in this section, students should have complete knowledge about the format of letter writing, essay, paragraph etc. You should practice writing as much as you can to prevent making mistakes as marks can be deducted when any details in the format are missing or incorrect or in the wrong order. It will help you to increase your creativity and imagination further making you write on any topic asked in the exam. In this section, students can expect questions on
• Informal Letter on any particular situation
• Descriptive Paragraph based on hints (visual or verbal)
• Writing a story from the outline or hints given
• Grammar: Students should regularly practice this section by solving questions from exercises and CBSE sample papers. You should have strong knowledge about the rules on various topics like tenses, passive voice, reported speech etc. You can avoid making mistakes through constant practice. You should learn to use grammar correctly without making any errors. Make sure you refer to a standard grammar book for preparing.
• Literature: Questions in this section will be asked directly from the NCERT Books Class 9 English. There are two books: the main literature book “Beehive” and the supplementary reader “Moments”. To ace this section, students should thoroughly read all the chapters line by line. Students can easily grasp the chapters as they are framed in simple language. You can remember the authors and poet names as well as the meanings of the chapter through notes making. You should not miss little details also. The format for this section is
• Very answer short questions-2 marks each
• short answer questions-3 marks each
• Long answer questions from the Beehive book-5 marks
• Long answer question from the Moments book- 5 marks
4. NCERT solutions: Students should answer all the questions given at the end of each chapter in their own words to analyze how well they have understood the chapter. You can verify the answers with the help of NCERT solutions. It will help you to know how to frame answers for questions like author or poet perspective or the analysis of a poem etc. It will guide you to improve your answer writing format which is very crucial for the exam.
5. Practice answer writing: It will improve your writing skills as well as speed. Writing answers will help you to avoid grammatical errors and spelling mistakes. It is the best way to improve your writing style. Stick to the word limit as per the marks weightage as much as possible. There is no use if you write long paragraphs for 2 marks questions. Make sure you write your answers clearly and up to the point without mentioning unnecessary details or repeated lines.
6. Practice sample papers and previous year’s question papers: Solving last year and sample papers as much as you can has a lot of benefits and is one of the best ways to prepare for the exam. It will help you to know how well you have prepared for the exam. Identify the questions that are being asked frequently and pay extra attention to them. It will also help you to manage time and practice proper presentation of answers. You will get to know how much time each section is required and you can plan accordingly. You will know what your mistakes are and where you are lacking. You should immediately make sure to improve those areas you are weak in to avoid making mistakes or errors in the exam.
7. Revision: Revise at least twice before the exam. You must revise the topic after you complete studying it. Revision is more effective than studying anything new.
