Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has announced the introduction of two advanced diagnostic services in pediatric allergy care, marking a significant step in improving early detection and treatment for children. The new services include skin allergy testing to accurately identify food and environmental allergens, and food and drug challenge tests, recognized internationally as the gold standard for confirming or ruling out allergies under specialist supervision.
The services are now available through pediatric clinics at the Ambulatory Care Center, and are aimed at enhancing diagnostic precision, reducing allergy‑related complications, and supporting families with reliable medical guidance.
Dr. Mohammed Al Amri, Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Medical Director at Hamad General Hospital, and Chair of HMC’s Pediatrics Departments, highlighted that the launch reflects HMC’s commitment to advanced diagnostic care. He noted that accurate testing empowers families to make informed treatment decisions based on solid medical evidence.
The new services employ specialized approaches that contribute to early diagnosis, individualized treatment plans, and improved patient outcomes. Families will also receive education on managing allergic conditions, including emergency action plans to address severe reactions such as anaphylaxis.
The clinic accepts referrals from Primary Health Care Centers, HMC hospitals, and Pediatric Emergency Centers for children aged six months to 14 years. Care is provided by a multidisciplinary team specializing in pediatric allergy.
Skin allergy testing offers precise assessment of food and environmental triggers, complementing clinical evaluation and laboratory tests. The food and drug challenge clinic reassesses allergy cases, allowing safe reintroduction of certain foods after medical evaluation. Drug allergy testing includes confirmation of penicillin allergy, with global studies showing many patients previously labeled as allergic are not, underscoring the importance of re‑evaluation to improve antibiotic use.
Dr. Aba Mohammed Al Kaabi, Senior Consultant and Section Head of Pediatric Allergy at Hamad General Hospital, emphasized the importance of early assessment of food allergies and safe nutrition practices. She noted that timely evaluation not only protects children’s health but also reduces burdens on families, providing official medical confirmation that improves quality of life.
