Germany Calls for Stronger UN Efforts to End Wars and Resolve Conflicts

Berlin, September 21, 2026 : Germany has called on the United Nations to intensify international efforts to end wars and find political solutions to conflicts around the world.

Speaking ahead of his departure for New York to attend the general debate of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said the international community must move beyond simply assessing the crises and conflicts confronting the world and focus on pursuing concrete solutions.

Wadephul urged political leaders to make sustained efforts toward resolving conflicts, stressing that even limited progress toward peace can be significant.

He also criticized what he described as an increasing tendency to rely on escalation rather than pursuing lasting peace and peaceful coexistence. He called for stronger international cooperation to promote dialogue and peaceful approaches to resolving disputes.

Wadephul said Germany would work to help bridge communication gaps between parties involved in conflicts and support efforts to facilitate dialogue.

He also called on Moscow to recognize the need for serious negotiations, while warning that Germany views Russia as posing an increasingly significant security challenge to European Union and NATO member states.

The German Foreign Minister said the UN General Assembly’s general debate offers a unique opportunity for countries to coordinate their positions and work collectively on major challenges facing the international community.
