HE Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) and Chairperson of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah met with HE Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Lyudmila Denisova.
During the meeting, which was held via videoconference, the two sides discussed the role of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner in providing international institutions with evidence-based information on the human rights situation in Ukraine, including the Independent International Commission of Inquiry, which was established by the Human Rights Council pursuant to resolution 49/1, adopted on March 4.
Denisova expressed Ukraine's gratitude for the consistent support it has received from national human rights institutions in the region, and for providing and coordinating humanitarian assistance to those who need it.. noting that most of the reports received by the institution relate to humanitarian aid, safety of humanitarian corridors, the missing people and the economic rights, including the right to health, the right to housing, the right to sanitation and the right to food.
The Commission estimates that more than 3.5 million Ukrainian refugees have fled to neighboring countries since Feb. 24. The Commissioner works with the UN Human Rights Office, UN agencies, displaced community groups and partners to report on the human rights situation and coordinate in the form of humanitarian assistance needed.
Since the beginning of the crisis, the Commissioner has been documenting and reporting violations, including on the right to life and security, investigating reports of missing persons, and monitoring the status of prisoners of war in detention.
The Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions had submitted a statement to the Human Rights Council in the urgent debate on Ukraine, expressing its grave concern about the state of emergency in Ukraine. The Alliance called for an end to hostilities and respect for international human rights and international humanitarian law, and urged and immediate, safe and unhindered humanitarian access to all those in need.
