First World Congress of Bioethics in the Region Inaugurated in Doha

H H Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation (QF), attended the inauguration of the 17th World Congress of Bioethics in Doha, marking the first time this significant event has been held in the Arab world. The Congress, taking place from June 3 to 6 at the Qatar National Convention Centre, is organized by Hamad Bin Khalifa University's Research Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics (CILE) and the World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH), a global health initiative of Qatar Foundation. This year’s theme is ‘Religion, Culture, and Global Bioethics.’

In his opening remarks, HBKU President Dr. Ahmad M Hasnah emphasized the ethical challenges humanity faces in areas such as science, medicine, artificial intelligence (AI), and global politics. He highlighted the importance of inclusive, multi-perspective discussions in bioethics, asserting that all voices should be heard and different perspectives given equal consideration. He noted the university's efforts to ensure diverse participation, especially from underrepresented countries in Asia, Africa, and South America.

WISH CEO and event co-chair, Sultana Afdhal, expressed delight at the successful gathering of renowned bioethicists and scholars. She underscored the importance of balancing international perspectives and evidence-based practices in health with the religious values and cultural traditions of Qatar and the broader Arab-Muslim world. Afdhal also announced the upcoming WISH topic on the ethical management of AI in healthcare, highlighting the significance of launching this discussion at such a landmark event.

Al Jazeera TV presenter Laila Al Shaikhli, host of the event, emphasized the Congress’s unique setting and its focus on the intersection of religion, culture, and global bioethics. She praised the Congress for promoting diversity, pluralism, and universal discourse in bioethics, especially in light of ongoing violations against healthcare institutions and professionals.

The event featured a panel discussion titled ‘Reaching Worlds and Intersecting Pathways: Religion, Culture, Diversity, and Global Bioethics,’ moderated by CILE Director and Congress Chair Mohammed Ghaly. Panelists included Sultana Afdhal; Dr. Caesar Atuire, President of the International Association of Bioethics; Dr. Voo Teck Chuan, Communication Officer of the International Association of Bioethics; Dr. Said Ismail, Acting President and Chief Scientific and Operations Officer of Qatar Precision Health Institute; Dr. Khalid Fakhro, Chief Research Officer at Sidra Medicine; and Dr. Julian Savulescu, Director, Centre for Biomedical Ethics, National University of Singapore.
