Can Women on a Husband-Sponsored UAE Residence Visa Work? Here’s What the Rules Say

Work Permit

Women living in the UAE under the sponsorship of their husbands do not necessarily have to cancel or transfer their residence visas when they take up employment.

Under the UAE’s employment framework, residents sponsored by their families can legally work for an establishment once the employer obtains the appropriate work permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE), where MoHRE jurisdiction applies.

This means a woman can generally remain on her husband-sponsored residence visa while being employed, provided the required employment authorisation is in place. The residence visa and the work permit serve different purposes: family sponsorship establishes the person’s legal residency, while the work permit authorises employment.

MoHRE provides a specific work-permit service for dependants sponsored by family members. According to the ministry, establishments can use the service to employ eligible residents whose residence sponsorship remains with their family.

The employer, rather than the employee simply starting work independently, is responsible for applying through the appropriate channel and completing the required permit procedures before lawful employment begins.

Depending on the job and applicable requirements, supporting documents may include a valid passport and residence visa, an approved employment contract or job offer, academic or professional qualifications for regulated or skilled occupations, and any other documents requested by the relevant authority.

Workers should also be aware that employment rules can differ for employers operating in certain free zones or under authorities outside MoHRE’s jurisdiction. In those cases, the employer should obtain the relevant permit or employment authorisation from the competent free-zone or local authority.

Keeping family sponsorship can offer practical flexibility because the employee’s residence status remains linked to the family sponsor rather than being transferred to the company. However, this does not remove the employer’s obligation to comply with UAE employment and work-permit requirements.

Starting a job without the required permit can expose both the employer and worker to legal and administrative complications. Employees should therefore confirm that the permit has been issued rather than assuming a valid family residence visa alone provides permission to work.

Anyone uncertain about their individual status should check directly with MoHRE or the authority governing their employer before beginning work.

Key points to remember

•    A husband-sponsored residence visa does not automatically prevent a woman from working in the UAE.
•    She generally does not need to transfer her residence sponsorship to the employer solely to take up a job.
•    The employer must obtain the appropriate work permit or employment authorisation before work begins.
•    A family residence visa by itself is not a substitute for a work permit.
•    Different procedures may apply to employers in free zones or outside MoHRE jurisdiction.
