California Chemical Tank Failure Sparks Mass Evacuations Amid Explosion Fears

Authorities have ordered tens of thousands of residents to evacuate after a failing chemical tank at a GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove triggered fears of a catastrophic spill or explosion.

The tank, holding thousands of gallons of methyl methacrylate, a volatile and flammable chemical used in plastics, has been under intense scrutiny since Thursday after rapid heat increases raised the risk of a BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion).

Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency, while the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) confirmed late Sunday that there is “currently no active leak” and that pressure inside the tank may be gradually releasing through a crack, potentially averting disaster. Crews worked overnight to stabilize conditions, spraying the tank with water to cool rising temperatures.

Officials stressed that the Bleve threat remains the worst‑case scenario, with interim fire chief TJ McGovern warning: “We are not there yet.” Emergency teams have prepared dykes and dams to contain any spill if the tank’s integrity fails, aiming to prevent chemicals from reaching storm drains or the ocean.

The evacuation zone covers Garden Grove, Stanton, Anaheim, Cypress, Westminster, and Buena Park, forcing school closures and road shutdowns. Relief centers have been set up, with food parcels distributed to displaced residents.

Nearby Disneyland remains outside the evacuation zone and continues normal operations.

GKN Aerospace, a UK‑based aircraft parts supplier, apologized to residents, pledging round‑the‑clock monitoring and risk mitigation. Local health officials urged residents to report any “fruity and heavy smell”, warning of potential respiratory irritation.
