Breaking Away from Media Limitations Al Jazeera Unveils AJ360 Platform

AJ360 expands Al Jazeera’s legacy and is a key part of the network’s continuous efforts to adapt and grow its content, particularly in the digital realm.

On Sunday, Al Jazeera introduced its new digital platform, AJ360, marking a significant milestone for the Qatar-based network in its bid to reach a broader global audience.

AJ360 combines news, entertainment, and in-depth explorations of global issues, offering more than 20 exclusive films and shows on demand for free. It aims to bypass the content restrictions Al Jazeera often faces on social media platforms, reflecting its motto of "no restrictions."

During a press conference at Al Jazeera’s headquarters, Palestinian journalist Muna Hawwa described AJ360 as an opportunity to "break free" from the limitations of traditional social media. Addressing attendees that included journalists, media personalities, and Arab social media influencers, she emphasized the platform’s independence and resistance to shadow-banning, which often hampers Al Jazeera's content on other platforms.

One standout production is the investigative documentary "Al-Shifa Hospital: The Crimes They Tried to Bury," which uncovers atrocities committed by the Israeli army at Gaza’s largest hospital. Despite facing censorship on YouTube, this film, along with others, will find a home on AJ360.

For lighter content, the platform offers features on topics like architecture, art, heritage, travel, and Islamic values. A highly anticipated cultural production is an exclusive interview with Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani, conducted by Ola Al Fares, which will give viewers a personal insight into her role in shaping Qatar’s cultural landscape.

AJ360 is accessible on multiple platforms, including web browsers, iOS and Android devices, and Apple TV, with plans to expand to Android TV in the future.

Since its founding in 1996, Al Jazeera has built a reputation for its fearless journalism, covering major global events such as the Iraq war, the Israeli occupation, and the Arab Spring. With the launch of AJ360, the network continues to evolve, catering to a younger audience with diverse, engaging, and informative content in their native languages.

Speaking to Doha News, Egyptian digital storyteller Farah ElKordy highlighted the platform's significance for Generation Z, noting the need for Arabic-language content amidst their consumption of international news. TikTok creator Abir El Saghir echoed this sentiment, expressing pride in Al Jazeera’s new venture, especially during times of conflict.
