Pretoria, September 14, 2026 : At least 21 people were killed in a traffic collision on the highway between Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamka in South Africa’s Western Cape province, local media reported on Monday.
The severity of the accident prompted authorities to close the highway in both directions and advise motorists to avoid the affected area and use alternative routes.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of the collision.
South Africa has a relatively extensive road network but continues to face a high rate of road fatalities, with speeding, violations of traffic regulations, and failure to use seat belts among the factors frequently associated with deadly crashes.
