20 Ways to Conserve Water in Your Home

Conserving water is something that everyone should be doing. Climate change is having some seriously negative effects on our planet and the amount of fresh water we have is decreasing. Because of these reasons, you should definitely think about how you can be part of the solution and not part of the problem.

Keep reading down below to learn some more about what you can do in your own home to conserve water, help the environment, and lower your water bills.

1. Shower Bucket: Why would you let tons of water run down the drain while you’re waiting for your shower to heat up? Use a bucket in your shower while you wait for it to heat. Then, you can use that water to flush the toilet or water your plants.

2. Turn Off the Faucet When You’re Brushing or Shaving: An easy thing you can do to conserve water is to simply turn off the faucet whenever you’re brushing your teeth or shaving. There’s no reason to leave the water running when you’re not using it. This is a pretty simple one to do that’s going to save you tons of water!

3. When You’re Washing Your Hands, Turn Off the Faucet: Another way to save water on that same note is to turn off the faucet when you’re washing your hands. Do you really need to keep it on while you scrub in the soap to get your hands clean? We think not.

4. If It’s Yellow, Let It Mellow: This is a tip that might not be for everyone, but why would you waste so much water with flushing when you can let the yellow stay in there for a while until it needs to be flushed? This can save tons of water from one of the most water-intensive things in your house – your toilet.

5. Fix Up Those Leaks: You should never leave a leaky faucet or other leaks unattended for long periods of time. Be sure to get someone out to fix them or fix them yourself if you want to save water and keep your house from being ruined.

6. Re-Use the Water You Use to Cook Your Pasta: If you really want to save water, why would you pour that pasta water down the drain? Just put it aside in a large pot and use it to water your plants once it cools down.

7. Go to The Car Wash: It’s much better to head to a car wash that recycles water rather than washing your car yourself if it’s looking a little dirty. You’re going to waste a lot of water with that hose in your driveway.

8. Shorten Your Showers: If you spend half an hour in the shower every morning, you are wasting tons of water that could be saved otherwise. Try to shorten your showers to as short as they can be while still getting squeaky clean.

9. Only Use Efficient Fixtures: Make sure that you have spent the time and money necessary to upgrade the fixtures in your house to the most efficient models. This is going to seriously lower your water bill and the amount of water you waste.

10. Shrink Your Lawn: If you can lower the amount of lawn space that you have to take care of or get rid of your lawn completely, then this is going to save you a ton of water with Tulsa irrigation.

11. Only Run Your Dishwasher or Washing Machine When It’s Full: You should never be running your dishwasher or washing machine when they’re only partly full of dishes or clothes. This is just wasting water every time you need to run it. Instead, wait until you have enough dishes or clothes to fill up the machines full.

12. Spot Leaks by Watching Your Water Bills: If your water bills are going sky high, then it’s a good sign that you have some leakage around your house. Keep an eye on those bills to figure this out and fix those leaks if you find out there are any.

13. Install A Rain Barrel: Harvesting rain water is a fantastic way to save water. You can use this water for irrigation purposes or to water your other plants. Why not use the natural world to your advantage to save water?

14. Flush with Less: You can reduce the water you use in your toilet by either buying a more energy efficient model or flushing half a gallon of water down when you need to flush. This is going to help you save a ton of water.

15. Wash Your Outside Plants Early in The Morning: Cooler morning temperatures are going to ensure that you don’t overwater your plants. When you water your plants in hot temperatures, a good amount of that water can evaporate out. This will cause you to keep watering your plant well over the recommended amount.

16. Fill Up the Sink with Water When Washing Dishes: Instead of letting the water keep running as you wash your dishes, just fill up the sink with water once you have the dishes in there. This is going to ensure that you don’t use any more water than you need to get those dishes clean.

17. Use Less Electricity: If you want to save water, then you have to look at your electricity usage as well. Power plants use a ton of water to operate and by using more energy than you need, you are causing those plants to use more water. Reduce your electricity usage if you want to save water!

18. Wash the Dog Outside: If you have a dog and need to wash him or her, you should do it outside on the lawn! This is going to give you the opportunity to wash your lawn and plants, while you wash your dog.

19. Skip the Shower Every Now and Then: If you can handle going a day or two without a shower, then try it out! Do you really need to shower every day or night to be clean?

20. Re-Use Gray Water: You will have to check the legality of this where you live, but you could re-route the water that comes out of your clothes washer and use that for other purposes. This gray water could be used to flush the toilet or to water the plants.

Each of these methods is going to help you save as much water as possible in your home. Try out each of them and let us know how they worked for you!
