Qatar's tourism sector witnessed a notable 18% surge in international visitors during April compared to the same period last year, totaling 382,000 arrivals versus 324,000 in 2023, according to the latest data from Qatar Tourism.
The upward trajectory in international arrivals has been a consistent feature since the year's commencement, except for a slight dip in March. In January, Qatar greeted 703,000 passengers, marking an impressive 106% increase from 2023. February followed suit with 596,000 travelers, indicating a robust 53% rise. However, March saw a marginal downturn with 329,000 arrivals, representing a 24% decrease. As of April this year, the cumulative number of international arrivals has surpassed the 2 million mark.
This growth trend has been steady since 2021, with Qatar hosting 611,000 visitors in 2021, escalating to 2.5 million in 2022, and peaking at 4 million in 2023, setting a new record.
The top 10 nations contributing to this influx include Saudi Arabia at 28% (equivalent to 526,000 visitors), trailed by India at 7% (150,000 visitors), and Bahrain, Germany, Oman, Kuwait, and the United Kingdom, each contributing 4%. The United States of America and the United Arab Emirates each contribute 3%, with Italy at 2%. Air travel remains the primary mode of arrival, with 210,000 arrivals, followed by land at 165,000, and sea at 6,000.
While data for April regarding accommodation supply and demand was not disclosed, as of March this year, there were 39,715 keys and 693,123 room nights available, with an occupancy rate of 56%.
Tourism has been identified as one of five priority sectors crucial to diversifying Qatar's economy, according to Invest Qatar. Qatar has emerged as a beacon for visitors, with nationals from 102 countries enjoying visa-free entry, while others can conveniently apply for an e-visa via the Hayya platform online.
With numerous local and international events slated in the country, the upward trajectory in traveler numbers to Qatar is anticipated to persist.
